Novak Djokovic was the defending champion heading into 2012 US Open and came against British number one Andy Murray in the final. It took five sets and four hours and sixteen minutes for Murray to overcame the Serb and take his first Grand Slam victory.
Murray claimed the first two sets 7-6 (12-10) and 7-5 before Djokovic pegged back in the third and fourth sets to take the final into a deciding fifth set. Murray showed great composure to not panic after losing two sets straight to grab the fifth set 6-2 to win the US Open.
7–6(12–10), 7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2 was the final score with which Murray became the first British man since Fred Perry, winner of the US Open in 1936, to win a Grand Slam championship.
