Ajax fined because of banner

Sheikh Mansour

Dutch team Ajax have to now face the actions of UEFA by paying a fine of £8,500, because of a banner that Ajax supporters had displayed in their 3-1 Champions League win over Manchester City in October.

The fans put up a caricature depicting a sheikh holding a bag of money with the words ‘Against Modern Football’ written underneath it.

There was little doubt that the banner was directed towards Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed al-Nahyan, billionaire owner of Manchester City.

Uefa’s said that the reason for the fine was for the ‘display of a provocative and inappropriate banner’.

Other slogan’s included one that criticised Chelsea, Red Bull Lieipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, while another said ‘€80 [£67] for the away section is ridiculous’.

Manchester City have been spending heavily since the take over by Sheikh and it also helped them win the Premier league.

Ajax eventually took the Europa League spot as they finished third in Group D.
