Asian Games 2018: India Schedule Today, Match List for September 1
As we near the end of the 2018 Asian Games the events are drying up. Saturday, therefore, sees a much more reduced viewing list than what you might have enjoyed over the last two weeks.
That said, there is still a chance for India to add to its gold medal tally with a few finals taking place today.
Amit Panghal is the sole Indian boxer to have made the final of his event. Unlike the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, where Indian pugilists were in a number of finals, they have found the competition a lot stiffer here in Jakarta.
Amit's task in the final of the Men's Light Fly (49kg) is a monumental one as his opponent, Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan, is easily amongst the best in this class. Dusmatov is the gold medal winner from the Rio Olympics and was a silver medalist at last year's World Championships.
He is also the current Asian champion having won gold at last year's Asian Championships as well as the 2015 edition.
Dusmatov is the heavy favourite to win, so if Amit does win it will be some upset. But the Indian has impressed many with his attacking prowess thus far at these games and he will need to summon all of his skills to topple Dusmatov.
The other major final of the day comes from the squash arena where India's women's team will fight for gold against Hong Kong after they beat the more fancied Malaysians on Friday.
In bridge competition, India's Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath Sarkar excelled on Friday in the first final of the Men's Pair event.
There are two finals in each bridge event with the second final being played on Saturday. Each final has five rounds and in the first final, this Indian team finished top in every round. So a good chance here that they return with a gold at best, a bronze at worst.
India's teams are also involved in the Women's Pair and Mixed Pair finals.
The pairing of Prakant Sharma and Jamesboy Singh are in the final of Men's Canoe Double 200m event. The women's kayak team meanwhile is in the final of the K4 500m.
The men's hockey team will have to lick their wounds from the semifinal loss and pick themselves up for their bronze medal match versus neighbours Pakistan.
Fans were excited at the prospect of an India-Pakistan gold medal match, but here they are smarting from their semifinal defeats and competing for the bronze.
India's judokas and divers will also be in action today.
