July - the holy month for sports lovers!

Roger Federer and Lionel Messi

This year the month of July is the holy month for Muslims around the world. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if the same is said for sports fans around the globe. You name the sport, and it is happening in July. The fans are spoilt for options right now. Almost every major sporting event is taking place this month. Here I have compiled a list of all the contests which will set any fan’s heart racing.

Cricket

The MCC V/s ROW concluded yesterday. MCC won due to Aaron Finch’s incredible 181. But who cares about the result when you could see Brett Lee bowling to Adam Gilchrist, Rahul Dravid fielding at first slip, Sachin Tendulkar hitting a straight drive, all at one place? The match was like a year’s worth fix for the cricket junkie. Also in the upcoming days, we get to see India taking on England. With both the captains, MS Dhoni and Alastair Cook, facing the fear of the axe if they don’t produce results in this series, the matches are sure going to be the ultimate battle of nerves. Whoever survives will live to fight another day.

Tennis

Wimbledon is the third Grand Slam event of the year. It is played on the grasscourts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Crouquet Club. In the women’s singles Petra Kvitova annihilated Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets to win her second Wimbledon title. The stage is all set for Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to fight it out and give the fans an epic battle of sorts today.

Fun fact: In 34 head-to-head matches, Federer leads Djokovic by 18-16. This is only their second match against each other on grass.

Football

The whole world seems to be caught up in football frenzy. From a pool of 32 nations, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Netherlands have made it to the semifinals. With so many matches going to the penalty shootout, goals being scored in the extra time, underdogs beating the clear favourite teams and a biting incident here and there, the World Cup has been a success so far. With Brazil vs Germany and Argentina vs Netherlands coming up, the awesomeness is just about to hit the roof.

Commonwealth Games

The CW Games will start from 23rd July in Glasgow, Scotland. 71 nations will be participating in 17 sports with 261 medal events. Athletics, badminton, boxing, hockey, judo, table tennis and so many other sports will be part of the Games. There is so much to look forward to!
