5th World Nomad Games 2024 Medal Tally: Updated standings after Day 2
The fifth World Nomad Games Astana 2024, taking place in the Kazakh capital city, has been one of the grandest editions of the unique event so far and has seen more than 4000 athletes from 92 countries competing in the tournament. The event started on Sunday, September 8, and will end next Sunday, September 15.
After the conclusion of Day 2 of the fifth World Nomad Games Astana 2024, hosts Kazakhstan sit atop the medal table with an incredible haul of 25 medals, including 14 gold medals. Kyrgyzstan, who lead the all-time medal tally in this competition, are second with 14 medals, including three gold medals. Russia round off the top three with 10 medals won, including three gold medals.
Meanwhile, India, making their World Nomad Games debut this year, are 10th with two bronze medals won by the traditional archery team. India are being represented by the Traditional Archery Society of Ladakh.
Surprisingly, Pakistan, with two bronze medals. are placed 11th in the medal tally.
What happens at the 5th World Nomad Games Astana 2024?
The World Nomad Games event, which was pioneered by Kyrgyzstan to promote Central Asian traditional games, features sporting events such as Er Enish (horseback wrestling), kok-boru (similar to polo), shagai (dice game), mangala (board game), and others.
Along with being a sporting tournament, it is also a venue for Central Asian nations such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and others to showcase their extremely rich cultural and sporting heritage through their indigenous games.
Several indigenous games are contested in the World Nomad Games, including traditional archery, horseback riding, and hunting competitions with birds.
Other than the Central Asian nations, the tournament features countries from all continents, such as Hungary, Antigua and Barbuda.
