BRICS Sports Games Medal Tally: Updated standings after June 19
Russia is hosting the seventh edition of the BRICS Games 2024, a multisport competition conducted annually by the bloc country members namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and the recently incorporated Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
India is ranked ninth in the medal tally with one gold, three silver medals, and 12 bronze medals. Russian Federation with 331 medals is on top of the tally, including 169 gold medals. Belarus and China hold the second and third positions.
Moving to the details of the medal tally on June 19, Indian athletes bagged two bronze medals in tennis to move up their tally count from 14 to 16 in the standings.
Speaking of tennis, Indian women's and men’s tennis teams secured the bronze medals. The women defeated Republika Srpska 2-0 in the third-place play-off. While Vaishnavi Adkar came back after losing the first set to beat Sara Mikaca 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2, Akanksha Nitture sealed the medal with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anastasija Ignatic.
On the other hand, the Indian women were beaten in the semifinals by Belarus. The Indian men beat Uzbekistan 2-0 for the bronze medals, with Karan Singh and Chirag Duhan asserting themselves against Amir Milushev and Ilya Ignatov respectively.
In boxing, Indian pugilists Anamika, Sonia, and Nupur bagged comprehensive 5-0 wins over their respective opponents to advance to the next round. Meanwhile, Manisha, Manju Bamboriya, and Saweety suffered defeats.
142 Indians are participating in BRICS Games
Unfortunately, in Rowing, Kayaking, and Canoeing, only two Indians made it to the finals. Gyaneshwor Singh Philem finished the Canoeing final in the last place, clocking 5:46.319 seconds. Neha Devi Leichonbam, in the Kayaking final, settled for the last spot with 1:07.346 seconds.
Indian fencers had a bad outing as none of them made it to the final. Wrestling, Swimming, and Equestrian Sports were also part of the day, but no Indian was part of those events. In the Chess blitz, Indian Aronyak Ghosh missed out on bagging the bronze medal by a whisker as he settled for the fourth rank with 7.5 points in the BRICS Games.
Notably, a total of 142 athletes are taking part in the BRICS Games 2024 edition, participating across 12 different sports.
