BRICS Sports Games Medal Tally: Updated standings after June 22
Indian boxers secured eight medals in the ongoing BRICS Sports Games 2024 on Saturday, June 22, including two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals. The other bronze medal came from the Indian men’s fencing team.
India moved one spot up from the ninth to the eighth rank in the medals tally after bagging a total of nine medals on Saturday. Overall, India's medal tally surged up to 29, including three gold, six silver, and 20 bronze medals.
Moving to the details of the day, Indian boxer Minakshi secured the gold medal after defeating UAE's Jawaher Abdulla in the 48kg category final. Another Indian boxer Anamika also bagged the gold medal after defeating South Africa's Thandolwethu Mathiba in the 50 kg category final.
In the 52 kg final, Jyothi suffered a loss to Russia's Anna Aedma to settle for the silver medal. Sakshi (57 kg category) and Manisha (60 kg category) secured silver medals after losing to Russia's Lyudmila Voronotsova and Nadezhda Golubeva, respectively, in the finals.
Other Indian boxers Prachi, Manju Bamboriya, and Lalita settled for bronze medals. With this, a total of eight medals were grabbed by the Indian boxers on Saturday.
In Fencing Team Foil's third-place playoff encounter, India's men’s team defeated Uzbekistan to grab the bronze medal. On the other hand, the Indian Epee women's team couldn't grab the bronze medal after losing to Azerbaijan in the third-place playoff encounter.
With only two more days to go in the BRICS Sports Games 2024, Indian athletes would be aiming to add more medals to their tally and propel the country to a better position in the standings.
It’s important to note that the BRICS Sports Games 2024 is a multisport competition conducted annually by the bloc country members. Currently, Russia has the right to host the competition.
