Glasgow to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games: Reports

The Commonwealth Games will be back in 2026 and as per reports emerging in the media, Scottish city Glasgow is all set to host the upcoming edition. Famous Olympics journalist Duncan Mackay shared the information on his social media handles on Sunday, August 11.

He wrote:

"Exclusive: Some good news for the Commonwealth Games, I am hearing. Multiple people have told me during the Olympics in Paris that the CGF have reached an agreement with Scotland for Glasgow to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. They will replace Victoria, who withdrew last year. An announcement is due shortly after the end of these Olympics - maybe even this week."

Glasgow also hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014, so it's not a new chapter in the city's sporting culture. Malaysia was offered $100 million in support to host the event but turned down the offer.

India at the Commonwealth Games

India is a part of the Commonwealth and has even hosted the quadrennial event once in 2010. The Commonwealth Games started way back in 1930 and India has been a part of the event since 1934. But the country didn't participate in the 1930, 1950, 1962, and 1986 editions.

India has won 564 medals to date at the mega event, including 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze medals. The three events in which India has been the most successful are shooting, wrestling, and weightlifting.

In shooting, India has secured 135 medals, including 63 golds. Wrestling has seen India win 114 medals, of which 49 are gold. In weightlifting, the nation has bagged 133 medals, including 46 gold.

The two sports India hasn't been very successful in are cricket (one medal but the sport was introduced in 1998 in the Games) and swimming (one medal).

The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games saw India win a total of 61 medals, out of which 22 were gold. However, India's best appearance came in 2010, when they played host. The nation secured 101 medals, including 38 gold.
