Wimbledon 2024: How much prize money did Sumit Nagal win despite losing in the first round of men's doubles?
Indian tennis sensation Sumit Nagal’s stay in his debut Wimbledon main-draw appearance in the men’s doubles event might not have been long, but it was certainly rewarding. Despite an early exit, Nagal is set to return home with a handsome sum of prize money.
Paired with Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic, Nagal's campaign at Wimbledon 2024 ended in the first round. The duo lost 6-2, 6-2 to the Spanish pair of Jaume Munar and Pedro Martinez in a match that lasted for one hour and seven minutes.
However, the pair's efforts were not in vain, as they secured a combined prize money of £15,750 (approximately INR 16,80,180). This means that the 26-year-old Indian tennis star will take home £7,875 (approximately INR 8,40,090) for his first-round exit.
Sumit Nagal’s combined prize money in Wimbledon 2024
Sumit Nagal not only participated in men’s doubles but also competed in the men’s singles event at Wimbledon 2024. Notably, he was the sole Indian representative in the singles category at the grasscourt Grand Slam, a first in five years since Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019.
Unfortunately, Nagal’s stay in men’s singles also couldn’t go beyond the opening round. Up against the 53rd-ranked Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, Nagal gave a tough fight in a match that lasted for two hours and 38 minutes.
Nagal ended up on the losing side 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. However, he still earned £60,000 (approximately INR 63 lakh). Combining his earnings from both the men’s singles and doubles events, Nagal’s total prize money from Wimbledon 2024 amounts to £67,875 (approximately INR 72 lakh).
Sumit Nagal's next major event will be the Paris Olympics 2024, where he’ll be the only Indian once again in the men’s singles category. This will be his second Summer Olympics appearance after bowing out in the second round at Tokyo 2020.
