Serie A: My Team of the Season
It has been another great season in Serie A. There have certainly been a lot of players that have stood out for me at each position, but there can only be 11 players on the team of the season. So let me present to you, my Serie A team of the season.
Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
Taken from All Super Stars |
Gianluigi Buffon is one of the best goalies in the world, so no surprise that he has been the best goalie in Serie A this season. Juventus are in first place in Serie A and well on their way to winning their 28th Scudetto. Buffon has recorded a Serie A best 19 clean sheets this season and has made 77 saves.
Juventus also boast to have the best defense in Serie A this season, only conceding 18 goals and Buffon has a huge say in it. The 2006 World Cup winning goalie has certainly regained his top form this season.
Right back: Maicon (Inter)

Despite not playing in as many games as you would like, Maicon has made his impact for the resurgent Inter squad. Maicon is a good defender but his real threat is when he comes forward using his speed. Maicon has scored one goal and assisted four other.
But don’t be fooled by those numbers, he creates and opens spaces for his teammates causing trouble for the opposing team. When you play Inter, you know Maicon is one player that you must account for.
Centre back: Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus)

Giorgio Chiellini is like a wall in Juventus defence and an outstanding defender in Serie A. Chiellini can match in pace with any offensive player in the world. Giorgio plays with such passion and emotion that you want all your players to have the same level of zeal. He has scored twice this season and has one assist. He is always a dangerous threat to score from set pieces and must be counted for.
Centre back: Thiago Silva (AC Milan)
Taken from Corner Kick |
Thiago Silva is one of the best defenders in the world, even the great Paolo Maldini said so himself. Silva has a tremendous amount of talent and speed that allows him to defend anyone in the world. Just like Chiellini, he is a threat on corners as well.
Thiago Silva missed the two games against Barcelona in the knockout round of the UEFA Champions League, and we were able to notice the impact it had on Milan without him.
If Milan wanted to play Silva at midfield, he would be one of the better ones in the league as well, that should tell you just how good he is. Thiago Silva will be on this list for many years to come.
Left back: Christian Maggio (Napoli)

I know Maggio plays a lot as a midfielder/winger, but for my Serie A team of the season, he will be my left back, like he is for the Italian National Team. Maggio, similar to Maicon, is a good defender that is also great at coming forward and attacking.
Maggio has scored three goals and 5 assists this season. Maggio opens up the field for Napoli and takes a lot of pressure off from players like Cavani and Hamsik.
When Maggio went down with an injury this season, so did Napoli’s form. It is rare to have a player like Maggio, who can not only defend, but also be such a big threat offensively. A lot of what Napoli does in terms of their formation, is based on Christian Maggio.
Right Midfielder: Daniele De Rossi (Roma)

He is one of the best midfielders in the world and that is why he is on this team. De Rossi has scored three goals and assisted three for his hometown club Roma. Don’t look too much into those numbers though, De Rossi makes contributes more from the defensive side of the ball. He is a leader on and off the field for Roma.
Every team wishes for a midfielder like De Rossi. He signed a new contract extension that will keep him at Roma for next few years. De Rossi has helped lead Roma to a late charge that could get them a spot in a European competition next season. De Rossi truly has had a great season once again.
Centre Midfielder: Andrea Pirlo (Juventus)
Taken from AC Milan Calcio |
Pirlo makes my Serie A team of the season in his first season with Juventus. With the great season Pirlo has had, I’m sure Milan are upset that they let him leave. Pirlo has scored three goals and assisted in 11. Pirlo’s 11 assists are the second most in Serie A. Pirlo has the ability to make just about any pass in the game no matter it is long or short. This season has been no different. Pirlo has created so many scoring chances for Juventus this season and is a big reason why Juventus are in first place.
Pirlo is a very consistent player and very well may have been the best player in Serie A this season in terms of playing a complete game. It is such an honor to get to watch Pirlo do his magic.
Left Midfielder: Antonio Nocerino (AC Milan)
Taken from Top Models 2012 |
Antonio Nocerino joined Milan during the summer from Palermo for only 500,000 euros. Nocerino has scored nine goals and has one assist this season. Nocerino has played in most of Milan’s games this season and was great in all of them. His style is somewhat similar to De Rossi. Nocerino is always willing to do anything for the team. He also has a knack of scoring crucial goals for Milan.
Nocerino’s great play has been a big surprise this season and him being on this list is a big surprise, but very deserving.
Attacking Midfielder: Sebastian Giovinco (Parma)
Taken from Goal.com |
Sebastian Giovinco may very well be one of the better players in football that no one knows about. Giovinco has been great all season and his numbers help to prove that. He has scored 12 goals and assisted eight this season, including 121 shots taken.
Giovinco is small in stature but his game is very big. Parma haven’t had a good season but, it has been worth watching their games just to see Sebastian Giovinco play. He has great dribbling skills, ability to cut-in, and create.
He truly is a special young player and if he has more seasons like this one, he will be on this team for many more years.
Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan)
Taken from All Football Stars |
Zlatan is one of the best players in the world, so it is easy to see why he is on this team. He has had yet another tremendous season for Milan. Zlatan has scored a Serie A best 24 goals and has assisted six for this season.
Zlatan is a big, strong, talented striker that can impose himself on any defender. Zlatan never plays with fear and always with confidence and its that confidence that allowed him to have yet another great season.
Striker: Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)
Taken from Bettor |
Di Natale is one of the best strikers and goal scorers in Serie A and this season he has played some great football. He has scored 20 goals and has seven assists this season. He and Zlatan have been the two best strikers in Serie A this season. Udinese seem to only go as far as Di Natale takes them and because of his great form this season, Udinese is battling for a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Take Di Natale off Udinese this season, and they would be way down in the table. Toto only seems to get better as he gets older. What a season he has had.
Manager: Antonio Conte (Juventus)
Taken from Bettor |
This was Antonio Conte’s first season as the manager at Juventus and what a job he has done. It was thought that this would be a rebuilding season at Juventus, instead Conte has his club in first place in Serie A. Juventus are also in the Coppa Italia Final against Napoli. Conte’s Juventus club have not lost any games this season and have conceded the least number of goals.
Juventus have also secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season. It is easy to see why Antonio Conte has been the best manager of the season in Serie A.
