Size matters: Ridiculously huge trophies from the sports world
Winning silverware in any sport is a big thing. But what if the trophy itself is bigger than the achievement?
Costa del Sol Trophy
One of the biggest trophies in football is awarded to the winner of a pre-season match in Malaga. Malaga retained the trophy last year after beating Everton 1-0.
Prime Minister’s Cup
The Prime Minister’s cup is a ceremonial cup awarded by the Japanese Prime Minister to the champion of the Sumo Wrestling Tournament held in Ryogoku, Japan. The trophy weighs over 40 kilograms.
Borg Warner Trophy
Awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 Indycar race, the trophy is made of sterling silver and stands 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs in at 45 kg.
Omega Mission Hills World Cup
The trophy is awarded to the winners of the men’s world cup of golf. The tournament is contested between nations with each nation being represented by two golfers.
World Boxing Association Flyweight Champion Trophy
The trophy is awarded to the World Boxing Association champion for the flyweight division.
Stanley Cup
Awarded to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff winners. The trophy is engraved with the names of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff.
Franz Beckenbauer Cup
The cup named in honour of German footballing legend, Franz Beckenbauer. It was awarded to the winners of the pre-season friendly hosted by Bayern Munich. It has been replaced by the Audi Cup.
America’s Cup
The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest active trophy in any international sport. Named after the inaugural winner of the trophy, the New York based schoone, America, the trophy is awarded to the winner of the America’s cup races between two sailing yachts.
IFA Shield
The IFA Shield is the fourth oldest club cup competition in the world, and is held in India. It’s an annual event, with 2013′s version won by Prayag United. Previous winners include the Bayern Munich II team.
