1935: Birth of Lord Ted, who was one of the most stylish batsmen England has produced. His medium-pacers were good enough to claim 66 Test wickets too. He was a brilliant all-round sportsman, excelling at golf as well.

1987: Birth of Ersan Ilyasova, a Turkish basketball player, who currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA.
1989: US Basketball League cancels its summer schedule.
Football
1963: Tottenham Hotspur became the first British club to win a European trophy by beating defending champions Atlético Madrid 5-1 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final.
1981: Birthday of Patrice Evra, French international playing for Manchester United in the English Premier League.
2002: Real Madrid won their record ninth European Cup/Champions League trophy, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the Final.
2004: Arsenal became the first side in more than 100 years to go through a league season unbeaten after beating Leicester City 2-1 at Highbury.
