The day in sports: 14th March
1. Spurs survive Inter scare to progress:
Tottenham suffered a fright before sneaking past Inter Milan to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. Spurs lost 4-1 on the night, but went through on away goals thanks to last week’s 3-0 success. Emmanuel Adebayor poked home in extra-time for a crucial away goal.
2. Torres saves Chelsea as they make the quarters:

Torres struck the winner as Chelsea then joined their London rivals in the last eight after eliminating Steaua Bucharest whilst Papiss Cisse scored with the last touch of the match, a header, to send Newcastle through as well.
3. Kashyap suffers shock exit at Swiss Open:
London Olympics quarter-finalist shuttler Parupalli Kashyap suffered a shock loss against old nemesis in the the third round of the $125,000 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold here on Thursday, while Saina Nehwal romps into Swiss Open quarterfinals.
4. Compton, Trott seize control of 2nd Test:
England seized control of the second Test against New Zealand as centuries by Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott put the tourists on course for a mammoth first innings total.
5. Injured Azarenka, Stosur cause Indian Wells wipeout:

The women’s quarter-finals ended with a whimper on Thursday as Azarenka and seventh seed Sam Stosur both pulled out with injuries.
6. Berdych books Indian Wells semi-final berth:
Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic serves to Kevin Anderson of South Africa during the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on March 14, 2013 in Indian Wells, California. Sixth-seeded Czech Berdych became the first player to reach the men’s semi-finals at the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday, beating Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4.
7. Rookie Stefani grabs PGA first round lead in Tampa:
PGA Tour rookie Shawn Stefani had six birdies en route to a six-under 65 to seize a two-shot lead after the opening round of the $5.5 million Tampa Bay Championship.
8. Thai Chinnarat on fire at Avantha Masters:
Thailand’s Chinnarat Phadungsil set the stage alight when he opened his campaign at the 1.8 million euro Avantha Masters with a sensational 11-under-par 61 here on Thursday.
9. Lillard helps the Trail Blazers beat Knicks 105-90:
The Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard had 26 points and 10 assists as he lead them to a 105-90 victory over the New Tork Knicks. LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Nicolas Batum added 18 points for Portland, J.R. Smith had 33 points and Kenyon Martin added 12 to lead New York as the big three of Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire were all injured.
10. Spurs beat Mavs to clinch playoff spot:
The battle of the veterans went Tim Duncan’s way as he scored 28 points and had 19 rebounds, to lead the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavs 92-91. The Mavericks got 21 points and 11 rebounds from Dirk Nowitzki as Vince Carter missed shot at the buzzer bounced out. Tony Parker sat this one out again for the Spurs clinched a playoff spot.
