Football:
2001 – Australia set an international football record, beating American Samoa 31-0.
2010 – Lionel Messi scored all four goals for Barcelona in a 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Champions League. This was the first time he scored 4 goals in a match.

Golf:
1916 – The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) held its first championship tournament.

Cricket:
2000 – Hansie Cronje resigns as South African captain.
1982 – Birthday of Ian Bell, English batsman.
