1983: Kapil Dev became the first Indian to score an ODI 100, scoring a mammoth 175* when India played Zimbabwe in the WC. 

1979: Sri Lanka beat India by 47 runs in Cricket World Cup upset.

2005: Bangladesh defeated Australia after they successfully chased a target of 249.

1975: Gary Gilmour takes 6-14 in Cricket World Cup semi vs England.

1981: Test cricket debut of Terry Alderman, vs England at Trent Bridge.

Football

1995: Norway won the Women’s World Cup with a balanced mix of overpowering offense and stifling defense.

2002: Bolton Wanderers completed the signing of Nigeria’s World Cup star Jay Jay Okocha from Paris Saint-Germain.

Tennis

1966: Birth of Luke Jensen, a former professional male tennis player from the United States.

1986: Birth of Richard Gasquet, a French tennis player. He won the mixed doubles Grand Slam title at the 2004 French Open, partnering with Tatiana Golovin. His career-high singles ranking is World No. 7

Basketball

1924: Birth of George Lawrence Mikan, nicknamed Mr. Basketball, an NBA center (6-time all-pro).
