Roger Binny

Cricket

1993 – The last day of first-class cricket for Ian Botham. Ashes hero and England‘s greatest all-rounder, he played his last match for Durham against the visiting Australians, bringing to an end a historic and glorious career.

1955 - Birth of the first Anglo-Indian to play for India – Roger Binny. Being a fantastic all-round cricketer, Roger drew immense fame for his great showing at the 1983 World Cup, playing an integral part in India’s win and ending up as the highest wicket taker with 18 wickets.

1979 – Birthday of SriLankan fast bowler Dilhara Fernando. Only Vaas, Jayasuriya and Muralitharan have taken more ODI wickets for Sri Lanka.

1910 - Cleveland Indian baseball player CY Young registers 500th career victory against Washington 5-4 in 11 innings

1960 - Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants became the first pitcher to get a one-hitter in his major league debut.

1952 - 15th modern Olympic games opens in Helsinki, Finland

1980 - 22nd modern Olympic games opens in Moscow; US & others boycott

 

Boxing

1971 - Birthday of Vitali Klitschko, the reigning WBC heavyweight champion
