1992: Last day of Test cricket for Ian Botham & Allan Lamb.
1937: Birth of John Edrich, a former English cricketer, who played for Surrey and England. He earned a reputation as a dogged and fearless batsman, and he is considered amongst the best players of his generation.
1952: Birth of Jeremy Coney, a former New Zealand cricketer, who played 52 Test matches and 88 ODIs for New Zealand, captaining them in 15 Tests and 25 ODIs.
Football
1955: Birth of Michel Platini, a former French football player and manager, and the president of the Union of European Football Associations since 2007.
2007: A brace from Juan Roman Riquelme secured a sixth Copa Libertadores for Boca Juniors.
2001: Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier made his first signing of the summer with the capture of left-back John Arne Riise from Monaco.

1932: Jack Sharkey beats Max Schmeling in 15 for heavyweight boxing title.
2002: Lennox Lewis retains boxing’s WBC world Heavyweight crown with an eight round knockout over Mike Tyson.
