1977 – Mark van Bommel, Dutch footballer, was born.

1982- Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, better known as Kaká, was born in Gama, Brazil.

Tennis

1968 – Carlos Costa, Spainish tennis star, was born.

Baseball

1876 – Eight baseball teams began the inaugural season of the National League. In the first game Boston beat Philadelphia 6-5.

1876 – Phila Nationals Wes Fisler scores baseball’s 1st run

1914 – Babe Ruth made his pitching debut with the Baltimore Orioles.

Basketball

1954 – NBA adopts 24-second shot clock & 6 team-foul rule
