1980: Birth of Steven Gerrard, an English footballer who plays for and captains both Premier League club Liverpool and the England national team.
1997: Newly appointed Newcastle United manager Kenny Dalglish made the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given one of his first signings at St James’ Park. Dalglish had been in charge of the 21-year-old at Blackburn Rovers, where he had played just twice in the Barclays Premier League.
2012: The 99-year old US Open Cup saw one of its biggest upsets when amateur side Cal FC beat the MLS’s Portland Timbers.
Cricket
1909: Birth of George Headley, a West Indian cricketer who played 22 Test matches, mostly before the Second World War.
1949: Birth of Bob Willis, a former English cricketer who played for Surrey, Warwickshire, Northern Transvaal and England.
Boxing
1987: Mike Tyson TKOs Pinklon Thomas in 6 rounds for Heavyweight boxing title.
Tennis
1962:Birth of Jan Gunnarsson, a former tennis player from Sweden, who won one singles in Vienna in 1985 and nine doubles titles on the world tour during his professional career.
