Football

1980: Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey by beating their own reserve squad who were known as Castilla CF at that time.

1983: Birth of Emmanuel Eboue, an Ivorian footballer who plays for Galatasaray and the Cote d’Ivoire national team. His natural position is at right back, but he is also used as a right winger.

1985: Birth of Lukas Podolski, a German footballer who plays as a forward for Arsenal FC and the Germany national team.

1997: Emmanuel signed for Arsenal from AS Monaco. It was the first official summer of Arsene Wenger’s reign at Arsenal and defender Emmanuel Petit was one of a raft of new players brought to the club in 1997.

Cricket

1915: Birth of Walter Hadlee, who was a New Zealand cricketer and Test match captain. He played domestic first-class cricket for Canterbury and Otago. Three of his five sons, Sir Richard, Dayle and Barry played cricket for New Zealand.

1964: Test Cricket debut of Geoff Boycott v Australia at Trent Bridge, 48

1971: In only his second Test, Zaheer Abbas laced a glorious 274 against England at Edgbaston, a 544-minute affair that included 38 fours.

1975: Birth of Dinanath Ramnarine, a Trinidadian cricketer who retired in 2002. He was a leg-spin bowler who, though competent, appeared to have one too many confrontations which eventually forced him to retire at 28.

1993: Shane Warne bowled the “Ball of the Century” to Mike Gatting on Day 2 of the first Test of the 1993 Ashes series. The ball spun from outside of leg-stump to clip the top of Gatting’s off-stump and remains an iconic moment in Test cricket.
