1997: Liverpool’s 17-year-old sensation Michael Owen marked his Barclays Premier League debut with a goal.

1998: Inter win their third UEFA Cup, beating Serie A rivals Lazio 3-0.

1962: Birth of Neil Foster, a metallic fast England bowler whose career was ruined by back and knee injuries.

1981: Birth of Laxmi Ratan Shukla, an Indian all-rounder who currently plays for KKR in the Indian Premier League.

Basketball

1980: Birth of Mario Stojic, Croatian basketball player.

Tennis

1989: Birth of Dominika Cibulkova, Slovakian tennis player, who has won two career singles titles.
