Cricket

1944 - Birthday of Australian Test cricketer and leg-spinner Terry Jenner, who later became well-known as the man who nurtured one of the modern day greats – Shane Warne.

1996 - Sri Lanka defeat Australia to win Singer World Series at Colombo.

2001 - Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh became the youngest player ever to make a Test century in the history. Ashraful made 114 in Bangladesh’s second innings against Sri Lanka, breaking the long-standing record for the youngest centurion set by Mushtaq Mohammad when he made 101 for Pakistan against India in 1960-61 (17 years, 82 days).

Football

1969 - Gary Speed was born. In club football, he had a distinguished career with Leeds United, and later coached his national team before his untimely demise in 2011.

2008 - Juventus opened their new namesake stadium, by drawing 1-1 with English third tier side Notts County.

1986 - João Moutinho, former Sporting Lisbon captain and currently plying his trade for Monaco, was born.

Baseball

1905 - Pittsburgh Pirates strand NL record 18 men on base and lose to Reds 8-3.

1919 – Babe Ruth hits his 26th HR off Jack Quinn in NY, breaking Buck Freeman’s 1899 HR mark of 25.

1993 – Baseball’s proposed switch to a three-division format OKed in AL.

2002 – Texas Rangers set a major league record by homering in their 26th consecutive game as Texas falls to the Tampa Bay.

Tennis

1974 - 94th US Men’s Tennis: Jimmy Connors beats Ken Rosewall.

1985 – 105th US Men’s Tennis: Ivan Lendl beats John McEnroe.

1996 – 110th US Women’s Tennis: Steffi Graf beats Monica Seles.
