US based data agency predicts India to win 5 medals at 2016 Rio Olympics

Sania Mirza is currently ranked the number one women’s doubles tennis player

One of the world’s leading providers of entertainment and sports data, Gracenote has predicted that India will win five medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Using a sample size of close to a thousand Olympic sanctioned events from the official International Olympic Council (IOC) database, they create virtual medal leader-board.

The algorithm suggests, India will fail to live up to its London Olympic tally of 6, but also stated that there is one gold medal in the offering. Instead of winning two silvers four bronze, Gracenote stated that India would win one gold, and four bronze medals.

The mixed doubles tennis team, which will include Sania Mirza and a yet to be named compatriot is expected to win gold. The women’s archery team, bantamweight boxer Shiva Thapa and 50m air pistol shooter Jitu Rai are expected to collect the bronze medals for India.

There is also an outside chance of the Women’s doubles tennis team to win bronze at the sporting extravaganza.

Gracenote expects the United States of America to garner the most number of medals, with a combined total of 102 medals (G: 42, S: 29, B: 31), followed by China with 78 medals (G:31, S:26, B:21) and Russia third with 66 (G:22, S:22, B:22).

Michael Phelps is expected to continue his dominance over Men’s swimming, despite a year out of the sport. He is expected to win five gold medals and a bronze, taking his career tally to 23 golds.

Majority of USA’s medals are expected to come from Swimming, athletics and gymnastics. A total 31 medals could come from these three disciplines. Meanwhile hosts Brazil are expected to notch up 35 medals (G:9, S:8, B:8), a new record for them.

Countries such as Argentina and Spain are expected to struggle with the former winning only two gold medals, their lowest since 1992 in Barcelona. Spain’s tally is expected to fall for the fourth consecutive edition.
