Abhay Singh stars in India’s brilliant show on opening day of Asian Doubles Squash Championships 2024
Indian squash star Abhay Singh stole headlines with his brilliant show on the first day of the Asian Doubles Squash Championships on Thursday, July 4. He emerged victorious in both events that he took part in Johor, Malaysia.
The Indian contingent had a successful outing on the opening day of the Asian Doubles Squash Championships, winning four out of the five events.
In the men’s doubles group stage encounter, Abhay paired up with Velavan Senthilkumar and beat David Pelino and Reymark Begornia of the Philippines 2-0 (11-4, 11-6).
Abhay also produced a scintillating performance in the mixed doubles. He paired up with Joshna Chinappa and won their Pool C matches on Thursday.
The duo first beat the Philippines pair of Yvonne Dalida and Reymark Begornia 11-4 11-3 and then outclassed Naisha Singh and Anders Ong Wee Jun of Singapore 11-3 11-6.
For the unversed, Abhay, currently World No. 66, is a two-time Asian Games medalist. He bagged a gold medal in the men’s team event along with Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar, and Harinder Pal Sandhu in Hangzhou. Besides, he also won a bronze in the mixed doubles event with Anahat Singh.
This year, Abhay emerged victorious at the Goodfellow Classic and the Willingdon Masters squash.
On the other hand, Velavan won the Batch Open 2024 tournament in February. This was his eighth title on the PSA Tour.
Abhay’s mixed doubles partner, Joshna is a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist and also won the yellow metal at the World Doubles in 2022.
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles pair Rathika Suthanthira and Pooja Arthi R won and lost one game in the Asian Doubles Squash Championships. The duo is currently seeded fifth in the mixed doubles category.
