Indian boys and girls lose WSF World Junior Squash Championships quarterfinals
Both the boys and girls teams from India missed out on making the last eight at the World Junior Squash Championships Team competition in Houston on Sunday. The sixth-seeded Indian boys lost 1-2 to fourth-seeded South Korea, while the girls fell to third-seeded Malaysia. Both lost their respective quarterfinals by the same margin.
The boys' campaign did get off to a great start when Yuvraj Wadhwani beat Seojin Oh 3-2, with scores of 11-7, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, and 11-6. However, Shaurya Bawa, who had just won the individual bronze medal last week, could not keep up that form and lost to the individual silver medalist Joo Young Na in four fiercely contested games: 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, and 6-11.
It was left to Kun Kim to wrap up the deciding match against Arihant KS and she did it in straight sets (7-11, 6-11, 9-11) to seal victory for South Korea.
Indian girls showed resilience throughout WSF World Junior Squash Championships but struggled in the quarterfinals
The Indian girls' team also showed good fights but lost their quarterfinal battle against Malaysia at the World Junior Squash Championships.
Shameena Riaz was outsmarted by Whitney Wilson 7-11, 3-11, and 10-12. However, Anahat Singh bounced back to win a draining five-setter over Thanusaa Uthrian 6-11, 15-13, 11-6, 5-11, 11-6, drawing India level.
The tie then rested with Nirupama Dubey, who fought till the end in a five-game thriller but went down to Doyce Ye San Lee 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 3-11, which sealed the match in Malaysia's favor.
The narrow defeat margins showed the fighting spirit and potential of the Indian boys and girls teams throughout the World Junior Squash Championships.
