How did the Indian hockey team perform at 1988 Olympics?

The hockey events at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, were played from September 18 to October 1. The Seongnam Stadium, which was built in 1984, staged all the games of the tournament.

The Indian team was placed along with West Germany, Great Britain, Soviet Union, South Korea, and Canada in Pool B.

The first game witnessed the Indian team losing 0-1 to the Soviet Union. After the opposition scored the goal in the sixth minute, they couldn't capitalize on their chances to break free.

In their second game, India played out a 1-1 draw with West Germany. Jude Felix Sebastian scored the goal for India.

Then, the Indian team completely dominated the hosts, South Korea, as they secured a 3-1 victory. Thoiba Singh scored a brace and Felix Sebastian found the back of the net once.

India were all over the Canadian team in their following fixture, which saw them winning by a scoreline of 5-1. Mohinder Pal Singh scored two goals, while Mervyn Fernandis, Felix Sebastian and Subramani Balada Kalaiah hit one goal each.

However, India's qualification hopes were quashed after they lost 0-3 against Great Britain in their final league game. As a result, they finished third in their respective group with two wins in five games.

In the 5-8 classification games, India played out a 6-6 draw with Argentina, which saw them winning the penalty shootouts 4-3. However, the Indian team faced a 1-2 loss against their arch-rivals, Pakistan. Hence, they finished sixth in the 1988 Olympics.


Great Britain won their third hockey gold medal in 1988 Olympics

The semifinals witnessed West Germany secure a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands, while Great Britain prevailed 3-2 over Australia.

In the final, Great Britain dominated West Germany 3-1, with Imran Ahmed Khan Sherwani scoring a brace. Interestingly, Great Britain ended their 68-year-old drought and finally won the yellow metal.
