How many editions has Deepika Kumari played in the Olympics prior to Paris 2024?
India recently secured quotas for men's and women's archery in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. Leading the six-member contingent would be two stalwarts who have immense experience at the Summer Games - Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai.
While Rai, who will be participating in his fourth Olympics this time out, he has never made it to the grand stage on four consecutive occasions. On the other hand is Deepika Kumari, an archer who first came under the spotlight after winning a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games (women's individual recurve discipline).
Notably, the Paris Olympics will be Kumari's fourth successive appearance at the showpiece event after she debuted at the London Olympics in 2012. Although she didn't win a medal in that edition, she finished eighth in the women's team events and was bestowed the Arjuna Award in 2013 by the-then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.
In the Rio Olympics in 2016, Kumari was once again a part of the archery team. In the women's team, she had teammates like Bombayla Devi Laishram and Laxmirani Majhi. But unfortunately, the team finished seventh in the ranking round. The individual event, however, saw Deepika Kumari make it to the Round of 16 but ultimately she went down to Chinese Taipei's Tan Ya-ting.
The Tokyo Olympics in 2021 was also disappointing for Kumari as she lost to South Korea's An San to bow out of the showpiece event.
Deepika Kumari's achievements
Deepika Kumari is a former Commonwealth Games gold medalist. In her career, she has also participated in multiple World Cup editions. Her first individual gold medal at a World Cup came in Antalya, Turkey. She has won a triple gold 13 times at the Archery World Cup and is one of the 11 archers who have recorded this feat.
Apart from being an Arjuna Award winner, she was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2016 and has also featured in Forbes India in their segment '30 under 30'.
