Assam CM signs 'good luck' gamosa for Boxer Lovlina Borgohain ahead of Paris Olympics 2024

Assam’s lone entrant at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Lovlina Borgohain, received a token of good luck from the state’s Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ahead of the opening of the event in Paris on July 26.

Sarma signed a special ‘good luck’ gamosa for the celebrated boxer who had won India a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Gamosa, a white rectangular piece of embroidered cloth, is a recognizable symbol of Assam and is often presented as a sign of respect. The CM also took the time to interact with the pugilist via a video call as she is currently training in Germany.

The signature was collected as part of an initiative by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) to extend best wishes to Lovlina Borgohain, who is set to make her second appearance at the Olympics. The initiative was carried out in the presence of the AABA Secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Joint Secretary Ashok Barua, and two senior members of the Assam Olympic Association.

While the chief minister is the first to sign the gamosa, the association also intends to collect wishes from players and certain other notable personalities before presenting it to the 26-year-old.

Lovlina Borgohain's recent performances

With a bronze medal finish in her maiden appearance at the Olympics in Tokyo, Lovlina Borgohain etched her name in the history books as the first woman from Assam to win an Olympic medal. She also became only the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, with the other two being Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012).

Post her impressive Olympic showing, the Indian boxer went on to win gold at the Asian Boxing Championships 2022. Although she had to face disappointment at the Commonwealth Games 2022, returning without a podium finish, Lovlina returned to form by winning the gold at the 2023 World Boxing Championships in New Delhi and a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

The rising star would hope to continue on her trail of good performances with an impressive showing at the upcoming Summer Olympics.
