BFI invites applications for foreign boxing coach after India’s disappointing campaign at Paris Olympics 2024
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI), on Tuesday, August 13, invited applications for the role of foreign coach. India had a disappointing boxing campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 as they failed to win a single medal. Lovlina Borgohain, who won the bronze medal in Tokyo in 2021, had to return empty-handed this time.
Dmitry Dmitruk, the current coach, will complete his two-year tenure before bidding goodbye. He had taken over from HPD Bernard Dunne. It has also been learned that the new coach will sign a four-year contract with the Indian team.
“The Boxing Federation of India is looking for a foreign boxing coach for their elite national team in the upcoming four years of period,” the BFI advertisement read, as quoted by PTI. “The main goal in India is to achieve a top result in the upcoming Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth and other major competitions.”
The BFI will also analyze the performances of India’s wrestling contingent at the Paris Olympics.
How did India perform in boxing at Paris Olympics 2024?
Amit Panghal (men’s 51kg), Nishant Dev (men’s 71kg), Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg), Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg), Jasmine Lamboria (women’s 57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg) were the Indian boxers taking part in the quadrennial event in Paris.
Among them, the focus was on Lovlina, as she was one of the three Indians to have previously won an Olympic medal in boxing, along with Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. However, she lost to Li Qian of China in Paris in the quarterfinals and thus lost out on a chance to finish on the podium.
Nishant also tried his heart out but agonizingly fell short of a berth in the boxing semifinals after losing to Marco Verde of Mexico. Nikhat Zareen, one of India’s high-profile boxers, was disappointed as well after China’s Wu Yu beat her in the pre-quarters.
