Deepika Kumari Medals: List of medals won by Deepika Kumari ft. two Commonwealth Games golds
Indian archery ace Deepika Kumari will return from the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics after losing to South Korea’s Nam Suhyeon in the quarter-finals of the women’s individual event. However, despite an unproductive outing at this year’s Summer Olympic Games, Deepika has a glittering medals cabinet, which includes two gold medals from the Delhi Commonwealth Games at the start of her career.
Deepika Kumari started her archery career as a young enrollee in the Tata Archery Academy in her native Jharkhand. She tasted her first success at an international event after winning the 2006 Archery World Cup junior compound event. She also won two gold medals in the 2009 Youth World Archery Championships at the age of 15.
Deepika Kumari won her first senior medal one year later, announcing herself to the world as India’s archery prodigy by winning two gold medals in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. The two gold medals came in the individual event and the women's team recurve event.
She continued her winning run by picking up two silver medals in the 2010 Archery World Cup – winning the first in the individual event at Shanghai and the second in the women’s team event in Ogden. She also won a bronze medal in the archery recurve at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, along with Rimil Buriuly and Dola Banerjee.
Deepika also had a successful medal run in the 2011 World Cup, winning gold in the women’s team event in Shanghai, as well as four silver medals and two bronze medals in individual, team, and mixed-team events.
The 2012 World Cup was equally fortuitous for her, as she won the first gold medal in the individual stage recurve event in Antalya, along with three silver medals in individual and team events. However, Deepika Kumari was disappointed in her debut Olympic Games in London 2012, where she faced a first-round exit after losing to Amy Oliver of Great Britain.
Deepika improved upon her World Cup results in 2013, winning two gold medals in the women’s team events in Medellin and Wrcolaw, along with three silver medals. She also won her first gold medal at the 2013 Asian Archery Championships in Taipei. Deepika picked up another gold medal and two bronze medals in the 2014 World Cup in Wroclaw.
2015 was a less fruitful year for Deepika Kumari, as she could only manage two silver medals in the World Cup, one silver medal in the World Archery Championships in Copenhagen, and one silver and bronze medal in the Asian Championships.
She also failed to win any gold medals in 2016, having to settle with just two silver and one bronze medal at the World Cup. Her bad luck at the Olympic Games continued as well, as she returned empty-handed from Rio 2016, losing in the Round of 16 to Taipei’s Tang Ya-ting.
Deepika Kumari returned to her winning ways in 2018, picking up the gold medal in the individual event in the World Cup. However, she had to settle for two bronze medals in the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok.
Deepika had one of the most successful years of her career in 2021 when she won five gold medals in the World Cup. However, her barren run in the Olympics continued, as she lost in the quarter-finals of Tokyo 2020 to South Korea’s An San.
However, Deepika Kumari has failed to make many additions to her medal tally in the last few years, only winning one silver medal in the 2024 Archery World Cup in the individual event. She also failed to win her first Olympic medal in Paris 2024 and will target Los Angeles 2028 to change that fact.
