How did Abdulla Aboobacker qualify for Paris Olympics 2024?
Indian triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker made the cut for the Paris Olympics 2024 via the Road to Paris rankings released by the World Athletics. He was at the 21st rank in the rankings.
Twelve athletes secured their spots after meeting the entry standard of 17.22m, while 20 athletes advanced via the Road to Paris rankings. Thirty-two athletes will compete in the men’s triple jump event at the Paris Olympics 2024.
At 14, Abdulla Aboobacker left his house to train in the 100m and 200m sprints at the Kalladi Higher Secondary School in Palakkad district. Later, he tried his hands in different athletics disciplines like long jump, high jump, shot put, and hurdles.
Subsequently, he found his pet event and started to develop his triple jump craft. Later, he started to shine on the state’s athletics circuit and secured the title in the Asian School Championships title in 2013.
In 2015, Abdulla Aboobacker emerged as the National Junior Champion and secured the title in the Junior Federation Cup later that year. From 2016 to 2019, he suffered minor injuries and participated in different events with brief breaks in the middle.
A look at Abdulla Aboobaker’s 2024 season
In the 2024 season, Abdulla Aboobacker competed in four major competitions in a bid to make the cut for the Paris Olympics 2024. In March, he secured the title at the Indian Open Jumps Competition in Bengaluru with a jump of 16.76m.
Later in April 2024, he settled for the eighth rank at the Diamond League 2024 in China with a jump of 16.33m. At the Federation Cup in May, he settled for the fourth rank with a jump of 16.23m. Later at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in June, he touched the 17m mark for the first time in the season with a jump of 17.00m.
Abdulla Aboobacker's personal best of 17.19m came at the Indian Grand Prix in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, in May 2022. His major records include a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham and a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2023.
