How did Bhajan Kaur qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Indian archer Bhajan Kaur bagged a quota for the Paris Olympics 2024 after winning the gold medal in the Paris Final Olympic Qualifier in Turkey in June, 2024. She topped the podium in the tournament held in Antalya earlier this year after beating top-seed Mobina Fallah 6-2 (28-26, 29-29, 29-26, 29-29).
Kaur is thus set to make her debut in the Olympics at the age of 18.
That she did not drop a single set showed how dominant she was against her Iranian opponent. After booking her ticket to Paris, Kaur has taken part in the Archery World Cup Stage 3. She finished 17th after losing to Zana Piniatric, but defeated Penny Healy 7-3 in the opening round. It now remains to be seen how the teenage sensation performs in the Olympics.
Bhajan Kaur's achievements
Bhajan Kaur was stupendous in the Asian Games 2023 that took place in Hangzhou. She was a part of the Indian women’s recurve team that won the bronze medal. Bhajan teamed up with Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur. India lost to South Korea, the eventual gold medalist, in the semi-final. But they made amends to finish third after beating Vietnam in the bronze-medal match.
In 2023, Bhajan also did well in the World Championships in Limerick and the World Cup in Turkey. In Turkey, she advanced to the semi-finals. In the quarterfinal, she also pulled off a huge upset after beating top seed Alejandra Valencia 6-5, but she bowed out of the tournament after losing 4-6 to Germany’s Elina Idrisen.
Bhajan is a part of the Indian women’s team for the Paris Olympics along with Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat. The men’s team comprises Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav and Dhiraj Bommadevara.
India has won Olympic medals in hockey, wrestling, boxing, badminton, and tennis, but they are still searching for their maiden medal in archery in the Olympics.
