How can the Indian men’s recurve archery team still qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?

India men’s recurve archery team failed to clinch the Paris Olympics 2024 quota after crashing out of the final Olympic Qualifier at Antalya, Turkiye on June 15, Saturday. However, they still have a chance to make it to the mega event in Paris.

The Indian men’s recurve team, comprising Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara, and Pravin Jadhav, faced a defeat against Mexico’s Matias Grande, Carlos Rojas, and Bruno Martinez Wing in the quarterfinals of the final Olympic Qualifier.

Nevertheless, they can still make it to the Paris Olympics 2024 via the World Archery Rankings route. Currently, Team India men’s recurve is placed at the second spot in the updated rankings.

According to the qualification rule for the Paris Olympics 2024, the top two countries in the World Archery Rankings, that didn’t make it to the Summer Games from the Qualifiers, will stand a chance to qualify for the Games.

Korea, the No. 1 ranked men’s recurve team has already qualified for the Summer Games. According to the qualification criteria from the rankings, the Indian men’s recurve team has a good chance to make it to the quadrennial event.

Top three teams qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024

Mexico bagged the gold medal after crushing Chinese Taipei by 5-1 in the final while Great Britain settled for the bronze medal after defeating Germany by 5-3. With their respective wins, these top three teams secured their quota for the Paris Olympics 2024.

In the quarterfinal, the Indian men’s recurve team looked all set for a comprehensive victory with a 4-0 lead. However, Mexico came from behind to stun India by 5-4 after a shootoff.

The Indian team received a bye in the opening round before securing a win over the 17th-seeded Luxembourg, comprising Pit Klein, Jeff Henckels, and Jerome Ansel, 6-0 in the second round to storm to the quarterfinals.

The Indian women’s team also failed to secure the quota for the Paris Olympics. Former world No. 1 Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur, and Ankita Bhakat lost against Ukraine 5-3 in the pre-quarterfinals.

So far, Dhiraj Bommadevara has secured India’s only archery quota for the mega event through the Asian Continental Qualifier Tournament in Bangkok in 2023.
