How did the Indian Men’s Hockey Team fare at the Rio Olympics?

India fell agonizingly short of winning a medal in the Rio Olympics in 2016. India were placed in Group B along with Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Ireland and Canada. India finished fourth in the table with seven points thanks to wins in two out of five matches.

Germany topped the table with 13 points courtesy of wins in four out of five matches. The Dutch and Argentina finished second and third in the points table. Ireland and Canada failed to go through to the quarterfinals. Canada failed to win a match and lost four of them.

Indian men’s team's journey in hockey at Rio Olympics

India started their journey on a handsome note after beating Ireland 3-2. Rupinder Pal Singh was their star performer in the match after he scored in the 27th and 49th minute. Against Germany, Rupinder scored as well, but this time around, India lost the match 1-2.

India, however, returned to winning ways after beating Argentina 2-1. Chinglensana Kangujam and Khadangbam Kothajit Singh scored twice and gave India a 2-0 lead. Although Gonzalo Peillat scored for Argentina, India did not let them draw the equalizer.

India suffered a huge setback after the Netherlands beat them 2-1. VR Raghunath scored for them in the 38th minute, but his efforts went in vain. India would have been disappointed as they failed to secure an outright win over cellar dwellers, Canada, who could not win a single match. India drew the contest 2-2 on the back of goals from Ramandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh.

After fighting their way through to the quarters, India failed to go ahead. They lost to Belgium 3-1 in the quarterfinal. Akashdeep put India on the charge with a goal in the 15th minute, but Belgium made a strong comeback to knock India out of contention for a medal.
