How did Manu Bhaker qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Manu Bhaker has been India’s most successful shooter over the last few years and she proved her mettle at the Olympic Selection Trials. The Youth Olympic champion qualified in three events for the Paris Olympics 2024.
Bhaker has won over 10 medals at the ISSF World Cups and entered the Tokyo Olympics as the World No.1. The 22-year-old was among the favorites to secure a podium position in Tokyo. However, a pistol malfunction during the qualification rounds meant she wasn't even able to qualify for the finals.
But now, she's back and in some style. Bhaker emerged as India's most successful shooter at the Olympic Selection Trials. She had already earned the Olympic quota in the 25m air pistol event and qualified for the 10m air pistol event based on her national ranking.
At the end of the four-stage Olympic Selection Trials, the 22-year-old secured the top position in both events with impressive consistency throughout the four stages.
Manu Bhaker is representing India in the women's 10m and 25m air pistol events, along with the mixed 10m air pistol event. She is partnered with Men's 10m air pistol Olympic Selection Trials winner Sarabjot Singh. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Bhaker had competed in the three events as well.
Manu Bhaker creates history at the Paris Olympics 2024
Manu Bhaker entered the Paris Olympics 2024 as India's best bet for a medal and she lived up to the expectations not once but twice. First, she clinched a bronze medal in the individual 10m Air Pistol women's event to become the first Indian female shooter to secure a podium finish at the Olympics.
Manu Bhaker then paired up with Sarabjot in the mixed 10m air pistol event to secure another bronze, defeating Korea 16-10 in the third-place match. With this, she became the first Indian post-independence to win two medals at a single Olympics and the first Indian shooter to win two medals at the Olympics.
