How many medals has India won in boxing over the years in Olympics?
India have won 35 medals in the history of the Olympics out of which three have come in boxing. Back in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Vijender Singh made history after becoming the first Indian to win a boxing medal in the quadrennial event. He won the bronze medal in the middleweight 75kg category.
Vijender finished 17th in the Athens Olympics back in 2004, but put his best foot forward in Beijing. He defeated Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora 9-4 to assure India its first boxing medal in the Olympics.
Vijender had also become the youngest to win an Olympic medal at the age of 22 years, nine months, and 24 days. In the 2012 London Olympics, Saina Nehwal broke his record after winning bronze in the badminton women’s singles at the age of 22 years, four months, and 18 days.
In the London Olympics itself, Mary Kom became the first Indian female boxer to win a medal. She won the bronze medal in the women’s flyweight category. After beating Tunisia’s Maroua Rahali 16-6, she ensured the medal for India.
Back in the Tokyo Olympics, Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal in the women’s 69kg category. She lost to top seed Busenaz Surmeneli in the semis, but had already ensured India a medal after beating then World No.2 Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei 4-1 in the quarterfinals.
