How many times has Paris hosted the Olympic Games? Everything about the French capital’s heritage in Olympic history
Paris is hosting its third Olympic Games in history, tied for the most any city has ever hosted. The 2024 Olympics opening ceremony took place through a floating parade on the River Seine and concluded just at the front of the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The French capital previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1900, which later came to be known as the Games of the II Olympiad. The Games were spread over five months and followed an entirely different format compared to what we are currently witnessing in Paris 2024. According to Olympics.com, 997 athletes took part in the competition.
The Olympic Games returned to Paris in 1924, and that edition marked the grandest event in the Olympics’ history. More than 3,000 athletes and over 1,000 journalists were part of the event, announcing the acceptance of the Olympics as a major international event. A century later, Paris is scripting history once again.
Over 10,000 athletes are taking part in the Paris 2024 Olympics, an equal gender ratio for the first time in the history of the Games. A few of the competitions, such as soccer and rugby, have already started on July 26. The Paris 2024 Olympics conclude on August 11.
Which other cities have hosted the Olympic Games three times?
In addition to Paris, Great Britain’s capital, London, has hosted the Olympic Games three times. The first Olympics London hosted was in 1908, eight years after Paris hosted their first. 1948 and 2012 Olympic Games were also held in London.
Los Angeles is set to become the third city in the world to host the Olympic Games thrice when it hosts Summer Olympic Games in 2028. The first edition in the city was held in 1932, followed by the 1984 Summer Olympics. Additionally, Athens and Tokyo are the only two cities that have hosted the Summer Olympics twice.
