How did Praveen Chithravel qualify for Paris Olympics 2024?
After failing to earn a direct entry to the Paris Olympics 2024, Indian triple jumper Praveen Chithravel made the cut via the Road to Paris rankings route. Hailing from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Praveen Chithravel recently created the men's triple jump national record, with a leap of 17.37m at the Prueba de Confrontación 2023 meet in Cuba. Notably, this was also his personal best jump.
In the men’s triple jump, two Indian athletes, Abdulla Aboobacker and Praveen Chithravel, will feature in Paris 2024. While Aboobacker secured the 21st place in the rankings, Chithravel was 23rd in the Road to Paris rankings.
Praveen Chithravel missed out on direct entry by 10cm
In the Indian Grand Prix 1 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru in April, Praveen missed out on direct qualification to the Paris Olympics 2024 by 10 cm as he jumped 17.12m. The direct qualification entry standard was set at 17.22m for men’s triple jump events.
At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, Praveen missed out on an all-Indian podium finish as he settled for the fourth position with 16.89m. Eldhose Paul (17.03m) and Abdulla Aboobaker (17.02m) secured the gold and silver medals.
Praveen qualified for the Hangzhou Asian Games at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in 2023, securing the gold medal with a jump of 17.07m.
At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, he jumped 16.68m to clinch the bronze medal. Additionally, at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023, he bagged a silver medal with a leap of 16.98m.
Recently in the Federation Cup 2024, Praveen bagged the gold medal with a leap of 16.79m while Eldhose Paul took silver with a 16.59m jump.
Meanwhile, in the recently concluded National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in 2024, Praveen secured the silver medal with a jump of 16.98m while Abdulla Aboobacker bagged the gold with an effort of 17.00m. Gailey Venister settled for bronze with a jump of 16.40m.
The men's triple jump qualification round at the Paris Olympics 2024 has been scheduled for August 7 and will start at 10.45pm IST. The final will be held on August 9 and start at 11.43pm IST.
