How did Shreyasi Singh qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Shreyasi Singh is among India’s best women's trap shooters and qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 after the National Rifle Association of India swapped a women's pistol quota with a women's trap event. She is also an MLA in the Bihar assembly.
Shreyasi started her shooting career in 2007, and after impressing in domestic competitions, she was named part of the Indian team for the 2013 Trap Shooting World Cup, where she finished 15th. A year later, she won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. However, she didn't qualify for either the 2016 Rio Olympics or the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 32-year-old qualified for the Olympic Selection Trials based on her impressive world ranking of 32. She finished second in the four-stage trials but did not initially qualify for the Paris Olympics since India only had one quota in the women's trap event, which was gained and used by the trials' top finisher, Rajeshwari Kumari.
After India’s air pistol shooter, Manu Bhaker, confirmed her place in two events, 10 m air pistol and 25 m air pistol, one quota remained vacant in women’s pistol events.
NRAI requested ISSF swap the women's air pistol quota with the women's trap event, resulting in Shreyasi qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024. She finished second during the Olympic selection trials and will now represent India in the women's trap event.
Can Shreyasi Singh win a medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024?
If the recent or overall performances of Shreyasi Singh are taken into consideration, it's unlikely that she will be able to win a medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The 32-year-old hasn't competed much internationally over the last couple of years, particularly after joining the Bihar assembly.
However, Singh showed promise during the Olympic Selection Trials, and after getting her place on the Olympic team confirmed last month, she would surely have amplified her preparations.
