How did Swapnil Kusale qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024?
Swapnil Kusale is among India’s rising shooting talents. Having won several medals at ISSF events over the last couple of years, he continued his impressive form at the Olympic Selection Trials to qualify for his maiden Olympic Games. He will represent India in the men's 50-meter rifle 3-position events.
Swapnil secured the Olympic quota in the men's 50-meter air rifle after earning fourth place with a score of 407.6 at the 2022 ISSF World Championship event in Cairo, Egypt. The 29-year-old missed the podium by 0.3 points.
During the four-stage Olympic Selection Trials, Swapnil Kusale started his campaign on a high note with a top score of 592, which included 199 in the kneeling position, 199 in the prone position, and 194 in the standing position.
The 29-year-old was battling multiple health issues during the trials, but despite that, he maintained his consistency, recording scores of 587, 587, and 573 in the last three rounds.
Swapnil finished second at the end of the trials and qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 in the men's 50-meter air rifle 3 positions. He will be in action for the first time on July 30 at 9:15 PM during the men's pre-event training.
Can Swapnil Kusale win a medal at the Paris Olympics?
Swapnil Kusale routinely scores around the 590 mark in the qualification rounds, and at his best, he can reach the 595 mark. He excels in kneeling and prone positions, but his standing scores are average. Nonetheless, those scores may be sufficient for him to get to the finals of the Paris Olympics.
Although the 29-year-old has a decent amount of experience competing at World Championships, a podium position is a long shot. Nonetheless, he does have the caliber, and it would be interesting to see how he performs.
