"Life has got me stuck on silver"- Yogesh Kathuniya rues missing out on gold yet again, on boost in recognition of para-athletes, and moreĀ

Yogesh Kathuniya has set the benchmark so high that even a silver medal win at the Paris Paralympics 2024 lacks that feeling of ultimate success. Yogesh won a second consecutive Paralympic silver in Paris but is still navigating through mixed emotions of joy and a sense of disappointment.

The para-discus thrower is being hailed by one and all for his stellar accomplishment, but something is still hurting. Yogesh was in a conversation with Sportskeeda at a recent felicitation ceremony for India's Paralympians.

"I always knew that I would end up with a definite medal. But, life has got me stuck on silver (smiles). I was very dissatisfied and upset having not won gold. The dream has stretched way too much now. But, my ambition will not die until I bring home that gold, which will surely happen. I will also breach 50m," said Yogesh.

Yogesh Kathuniya wants to go the distance but somehow has been alluded to the first place finish in numerous recent competitions. He feels it is time to take a break as his mind needs rejuvenation.

"I work really hard but somehow have been ending up second for a while now. It's primarily due to a past cervical injury that still needs complete healing from within. A break of two to three months is what will help me recover both physically and mentally. I feel I will be back at my absolute best soon," he added.

"The recognition that I am getting has made me a lot more mature"- Yogesh Kathuniya speaks on how life has changed with success

Yogesh Kathuniya is one of those who can perfectly explain what the Paralympic growth has been like in India. Yogesh first gained recognition when he brought home the silver from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. However, the 27-year-old feels the reception this time around is vastly different.

"When I look around this time, there are so many people wanting to speak with me. The recognition compared to four years back has significantly grown. It has made me a lot more mature in how I carry myself. I have also improved on my communication skills because I know I have a voice now," Yogesh said.

Winning a Paralympic medal is huge and to do so twice is extra special. There is no taking away from the consistency the talented para-athlete has shown.

"The passion I have for sports is what has helped me be consistent. I had started playing for fun and fitness but slowly it has grown on me. The facilities have also improved so it has ensured I can maintain my performances," Yogesh added.

Yogesh Kathuniya can be proud of what he has accomplished in Paris. The entire nation will be rallying behind him hoping to see him fulfil his ultimate dream of winning a gold soon enough.
