Mirabai Chanu narrowly misses podium, secures 4th place finish in women's 49kg weightlifting at Paris Olympics 2024

Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medalist Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed out on a podium finish, securing fourth place in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on August 7. Chanu, representing India with high hopes, delivered a commendable performance but fell just short of clinching a medal.

In the snatch category, Mirabai Chanu lifted 85kg on her second attempt and improved to 88kg on her third attempt, demonstrating her formidable strength and technique. These efforts positioned her well, but the competition was fierce.

Moving into the clean-and-jerk segment, Mirabai Chanu lifted 111kg on her first attempt, giving her a total of 199kg. Despite her determined efforts and strong lifts, her final total was not enough to surpass the top three competitors who put up exceptional performances.

The gold medal went to Hou Zhihui of the People's Republic of China, who set an Olympic record with a total of 206kg, lifting 89kg in snatch and 117kg in clean and jerk.

Romania's Mihaela Valentina Cambei claimed the silver with a total of 205kg, lifting 93kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk. Thailand's Surodchana Khambao secured the bronze with a total of 200kg, lifting 88kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk.
