Neeraj Chopra likey to split with coach Klaus Bartonietz as AFI begin quest for new candidate: Reports
Neeraj Chopra, the two-time Olympic and World Championship medalist, has hinted at significantly changing his coaching setup.
During an interaction with students and coaches at the Sports University of Haryana, Chopra indicated that he is considering a shift in his training approach by bringing in a new coach. The decision comes after years of working with Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, a biomechanics expert who played a crucial role in Chopra’s success. He said:
“My coach was a biomechanics expert,” Chopra explained, reflecting on his time with Dr. Bartonietz.
“He would tell me in detail which angle to throw at and what was lacking in my technique,” he added.
Neeraj Chopra further addressed his motivation for the transition.
"I’ve realized that following the same plan and workout routine isn't yielding new results," he said, acknowledging that injuries have hampered his attempts to break the 90m barrier."
Citing a German shot-putter's advice—“Don’t expect different results if you’re doing the same work”—Neeraj Chopra expressed his belief that altering his workouts and mindset could bring about the breakthrough he's been striving for.
Athletics Federation of India looks for a new coach for Neeraj Chopra
Dr. Adille J. Sumariwalla, President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), confirmed that they are actively searching for a new coach to help Chopra elevate his game.
“Dr. Bartonietz himself suggested this move, citing his age and family commitments,” Sumariwalla revealed.
As per AFI President, the German coach believed a fresh perspective was needed to take Chopra to the next level.
Dr. Bartonietz had been working with Neeraj Chopra for over five years, initially as an assistant to Uwe Hohn before taking over as head coach after Chopra’s elbow surgery in 2018.
Their partnership led to Chopra’s historic achievements, including two Olympic medals. But, it seems that both mentor and athlete now agree that it's time for a new chapter in Chopra’s illustrious career.
