"No detailed order has come yet" - Vinesh Phogat's lawyer on CAS verdict
The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Vinesh Phogat's appeal for a shared silver medal on Wednesday. Phogat, who participated in the women's 50 kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024, made it all the way to the final.
She was supposed to take on the USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in the ultimate fixture. However, she was disqualified owing to 100 grams of extra weight on the morning of the fixture.
She was heartbroken and approached the CAS for a joint silver medal. The Indian Olympic Association's lawyer, Vidushpat Singhania, said Thursday that only a single-line order has been released and no proper details have been provided.
"No detailed order has come yet. Only a single-line order has come so far that her appeal has been dismissed. They have not cited a reason why has it been dismissed or why did they take so much time...We were both surprised and disappointed that a decision came last evening and her appeal was dismissed," he told ANI.
"We hope that the detailed order will come in 10-15 days," he added. "CAS decision can be appealed against at the Swiss Federal Tribunal within 30 days. The 30-day time will begin after a detailed order comes. Harish Salve is with us, he will guide us. We will sit with him, draft an appeal and file it."
Vinesh Phogat tried her best to lose weight
Vinesh Phogat was more than two kilograms overweight on the night prior to the weight test for the final. She didn't eat or drink water and kept on skipping, jogging, and cycling.
She also underwent sauna treatment to reduce the extra weight. During the weighting on the morning of the final, she was found to be 100 grams overweight and, as a result, was disqualified.
Many former and current athletes stood by her and supported her. Ultimately, Phogat announced her retirement. She has gone through many battles, both on and off the court, in the past year. However, her hope for an Olympic medal comes to an end with her decision to retire.
