Paris 2024 Olympics Athletics: Jyothi Yarraji fails to qualify for women’s 100m hurdles semi-final

Indian sprinter Jyothi Yarraji failed to progress to the semi-final round of the women’s 100m hurdles event in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. She finished fourth in Heat 1 of the repechage round on Thursday, August 8.

The 24-year-old sprinter from Vishakhapatnam clocked a timing of 13.17 seconds in her repechage round heat, which put her in the fourth position. Only the top two athletes from each heat progress through to the semi-final event.

From Jyothi’s heat, South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.79s) and the Netherlands’s Maayke Tjin-A-Lim (12.87s) progressed to the semi-final.

Jyothi Yarraji, an Asian Games silver medalist and a national record holder in her event with a timing of 12.78s, will be disappointed with her Paris Olympics 2024 journey as she finished in a lowly 35th position in the qualification round. And following her disappointing performance in the repechage round, the sprinter will return empty-handed from her debut Olympic appearance.

Meanwhile, the sprinters who qualified for the women’s 100m hurdles semi-final will compete for a place in the final. The semi-final run starts on Friday, August 9, from 3:35 pm IST onwards.

Jyothi Yarraji’s elimination is another blow to the 29-member athletics contingent sent by India to Paris. Except for the silver medalist Neeraj Chopra, no other athlete could secure a podium finish in Paris, which is a worrying sign from the largest-ever athletics contingent sent by India to an Olympic Games. Sprinter Avinash Sable had managed to make it to the final round of the men’s 3000m steeplechase event, but could not secure a podium finish after finishing 11th
