Paris Olympics 2024 Athletics: When is Neeraj Chopra's medal ceremony?
India's superstar Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal with an 89.45-meter throw in the men's javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, August 8. He finished behind Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m.
In the lead-up to the final, Neeraj Chopra was placed in Group B of the qualification round, needing to breach the 84-meter mark. He did that with a single throw of 89.34, which was also his season best.
Neeraj started with a foul throw in the final but backed it up with another season-best throw of 89.45m, which put him in second place behind Arshad. The Indian sporting icon managed to hold on to that spot as he secured India's first silver medal of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Grenada's Anderson Peters won the bronze medal in the event with a throw of 88.54m. Meanwhile, Arshad Nadeem set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m, overtaking Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen's 90.57m from the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The medal ceremony of the event has been scheduled for Friday, August 9, and will take place at 10.30pm IST.
Neeraj Chopra on his performance at Paris Olympics 2024
Neeraj etched his name as one of India's greatest-ever athletes by securing a podium finish at a second consecutive Summer Games. Following his silver medal win, Neeraj told the media:
“I have the medal in one hand and the Indian flag in the other, so I'm happy about that, but there's a lot to work on. I've been injured for a while now, and haven't been able to compete as much as I would like. I've not been able to work on my mistakes, but once I can start working on these mistakes we'll see good results.”
Neeraj became India's first silver medallist at the Summer Games this year, taking the country's tally to five medals, two short of their Tokyo Olympics haul.
