Paris 2024 Olympics Badminton Points Table: Group K updated standings after HS Prannoy vs Fabian Roth
Indian shuttler HS Prannoy jumped to the top of Group K of the men’s singles event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, beating Germany’s Fabian Roth 21-18, 21-12.
After this victory, Prannoy moved to the top of Group K, while Fabian Roth dropped to the bottom. Vietnam's Le Duc Phat is also in the group, but he has yet to play any matches in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
32-year-old Prannoy, who was the 13th-seeded player at the Olympics, defeated Roth in his first Group K match in a dominant display of skill and power. He will face Le Duc Phat on Wednesday at 11:00 pm IST.
A victory in the second match against Duc Phat will give HS Prannoy confidence to secure a podium finish in this year’s Summer Olympic Games after pistol shooter Manu Bhaker won the first medal for India on Sunday.
How did HS Prannoy fare against Fabian Roth in the Paris 2024 Olympics?
Prannoy, the Asian Games silver medalist, scored the first two points. He then led for the majority of the first set, displaying athleticism and matching Roth's strong shots.
Despite Roth leading momentarily in the first set by two points, Prannoy fought back to restore parity and eventually take the lead.
After some excellent long rallies by Prannoy, the first game ended 21-18, with the Indian shuttler comfortably getting the better of his opponent despite the close scoreline.
In the second game, Prannoy was at his best. He led throughout the game, and Roth – despite trying his best – had no answers for Prannoy’s long rallies.
The closest that Roth came was to close down the gap to 5 points (15-10), but Prannoy stuck to his guns and forced errors from the German with some powerful shots. The dominance bore fruit as HS Prannoy won his opening match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
