The Paris Olympics 2024 is 10 days away and the International Table Tennis Federation has announced the seedings for the much-awaited showpiece event. The table tennis action will start on July 27 at the South Paris Arena 4 and will continue till August 10.
Indian table tennis athletes have made headlines following the announcement of ITTF. Among the women's singles category, Sreeja Akula has been seeded 16 and Manika Batra follows her in 18. In the men's singles discipline, Sharath Kamal finds himself positioned 24 and Harmeet Desai has been ranked 49.
The men's and the women's teams representing India at the Paris Olympics have been ranked 11 and 14, respectively.
For Sreeja Akula, this will be her debut at the Paris Olympics. The 25-year-old, who is also India's No.1, recently secured the limelight by gaining a career-high world ranking of #24, five spots ahead of Manika Batra.
Speaking of Sharath Kamal, in March 2024, he achieved a world ranking of 34, and now sees himself seeded 24 in the men's singles event. Kamal will notably also be India's flag-bearer at the Paris Olympics this month.
India table tennis squad preparing hard
India have seen improvements in their table tennis contingent, especially in the women's category. Both Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra are currently the best paddlers in the country and their representation at the Summer Games only establishes the hope of a medal.
India are yet to bag a medal in the sport of table tennis at the Olympics and this edition is the perfect one for them to break this myth and create a new milestone achievement.
The table tennis contingent has been using technology at its best to prepare for the Summer Games.
Moreover, a special table tennis table had also been ordered for Manika Batra; this will be the same table that will be used at the Games and is expected to help Batra understand the dynamics (spin, speed and bounce) of the table.
