Paris Olympics 2024: 13-member medical team to travel with Indian athletes for the mega event
For the first time in Olympics history, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is all set to send in a comprehensive medical support team of 13 members alongside athletes to the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024, thanks to the support from the Sports Ministry and Sports Authority of India (SAI).
The medical team will be headed by renowned sports injury expert Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. His team will be taking care of athletes’ health issues as well as injury management around the clock at Paris 2024.
Also, sleep therapists, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and psychologists will be available to assist athletes. Additionally, there will be a recovery and rehabilitation room available around the clock for all the athletes at the Athletes Village.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Pardiwala, will be accompanying a nearly 120-member Indian contingent with his medical team to provide the best possible medical support in the areas of sports nutrition, mental conditioning, sports massage, recovery, and sleep.
“Ever since the sports science team was announced, the first thing that we’ve done is start knowing our athletes. This is very important from three different aspects including sports medicine, sports nutrition and mental conditioning. You can’t start at the last minute,” said Dr. Pardiwala as quoted by Sportstar.
“The nutritionist, the mental conditioning coach, the physiotherapist, the sports medicine specialist have been going to the different camps…so that we have better access, knowing our athletes better, knowing their condition better is so important," he added.
Sleep pods to be available for Indian athletes during the Paris Olympics 2024
Furthermore, Dr. Pardiwala assured athletes that there would be sleep pods available in case the athletes needed the equipment for rest and recovery. He added that all the Indian athletes participating in the Paris Olympics are "fit enough" to compete on the big stage when the mega event starts on July 26.
Notably, Dr. Pardiwala treated top athletes, including Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant when he suffered injuries during a car accident and Tokyo Games silver medalist Mirabai Chanu.
The medical team, headed by Pardiwala, would be aiming to give the best rest and recovery facilities to the athletes as they hope to better the seven-medal haul achieved at Tokyo 2020.
