Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker participated in the men's triple jump qualification event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday, August 7. The country's largest stadium, Stade de France hosted the competition. Chithravel was slotted in Group A, while Aboobacker was a part of Group B.
The automatic qualification mark for the event was set as 17.10, which both the athletes had breached in their careers. Otherwise, all the top 12 athletes from the event would have advanced to the final.
In his first attempt, Chithravel and Aboobacker both jumped 15.99m and were tied for the 19th position. Notably, four athletes had already qualified in their first attempt.
The second attempt saw Chithravel increase his jump to 16.25m, while Aboobacker also recorded a higher jump of 16.19m. It was interesting to see if two of them could go past 16.70 to stake a strong claim for the qualification to the final round.
However, Chithravel returned with a jump of 16.21m and Aboobacker finished with his best attempt of 16.49m. With this, both athletes failed to clear the qualification mark or find the presence among the top 12 athletes and bowed out of the tournament. Aboobacker finished at the 21st spot, while Chithravel had a disappointing 27th-place finish.
Chithravel had qualified for the showpiece event through the Road to Paris ranking quota. He was ranked 23rd out of the 32 top triple jumpers in the world. Meanwhile, Aboobacker qualified for the Games based on his 21st rank in the Road to Paris rankings.
